American Samoa laboratory re-certified

11:14 am on 21 December 2009

The only laboratory in American Samoa has been re-certified and is again in compliance with United States regulations.

In order for a laboratory to perform testing under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 or CLIA regulation, it must comply with all CLIA requirements.

Susan Naka, with the Hawai'i Health Department's CLIA program, says federal regulations require onsite surveys to determine whether or not a laboratory is in compliance with the applicable federal regulations.

She says compliance with these regulations is a condition of certification for the CLIA program.

It was June this year that LBJ's lab underwent the re-certification survey.

The next re-certification survey is about two years away.
