PNG Cabinet called on to back anti-corruption drive

2:39 pm on 28 December 2009

There's a call in Papua New Guinea for a senior Government Minister to lead the drive against corruption.

Transparency International PNG's chair, Peter Aitsi, has praised the Government's new Chief Secretary, Manasupe Zurenuoc, for speaking out on public sector reform and for taking a stance against corruption.

Mr Aitsi says while successive leaders have allowed the bureaucracy to deteriorate, but it is now showing a willingness to embrace change and it's time for senior politicians to also respond to the call.

"We feel that it would be supportive of that anti corruption process to a senior minister oversight it, supporting the Chief Secretary, so that it has political muscle, if you like, to really make some inroads in the fight against corruption."
