Samoa's Ministry of Police and Prisons professional standards unit has launched an investigation into an alleged extra-marital affair between a senior police officer working at the main Tafaigata prison and a female inmate.

The woman said to be involved has since been released from jail.

The Police Commissioner, Lilomaiava Fou Taioalo, has indicated the investigation will focus on whether the alleged affair breached ministry codes.

The senior officer at the centre of the allegations had previously been disciplined because of another alleged affair while serving with a peace keeping mission overseas.

Police sources say this involved transferring the officer to work at Tafaigata prison.
