A New Zealand woman has undergone surgery in Apia after falling from her horse during a race on Boxing Day in Samoa.

Rowena Smith suffered a broken leg and a fractured collar bone.

Doctors at the main Tupua Tamasese Meaole hospital say Ms Smith is in a stable condition.

The horse she rode died after the incident.

It's thought the animal had a heart attack.
