Four Chinese in custody in Fiji amid allegations of jewellery smuggling

Police in Fiji are testing a large quantity of suspected fake gold jewellery taken from four Chinese people who were arrested on entering the country yesterday at Nadi Airport.

The arrests follow reports of fake gold jewellery being sold in Fiji.

Police spokesperson Ema Dimila says this is the second time this group of Chinese nationals is thought to have entered Fiji with similar goods.

"There were four Chinese nationals that were arrested early yesterday that were handed over to the border police from the customs at Nadi International Airport with regards to the amount of jewellery that they were bringing into the country, excessive jewellery."

Ema Dimila says testing the authenticity of the jewellery is part of the investigation and the four people remain in police custody where they are being questioned.

She would not confirm a report in the Fiji Times the group sold Buddha statues and gold nuggets to a businessman which later turned out to be made of brass.
