Fiji Consumer Council welcomes administrative changes

Fiji's Consumer Council says a merger between the Prices and Incomes Board and the Commerce Commission next month will benefit consumers.

The Prices and Incomes Board was responsible for monitoring and determining the price of certain items, including fuel and basic food.

The price controls were aimed at keeping prices of everyday items at an affordable level.

The consumer council's chief executive officer, Premila Kumar, says she's been lobbying for a merger for years and welcomes the announcement.

"Consumers were struggling to get a redress from these institutions. The cost of running each institution separately meant administrative costs were much higher. However the council still maintains that there are certain food items, which will be under price control. We maintain that there are items which must be under tight control."

Premila Kumar says it's still unclear whether other regulated items, including rentals and medications, will remain controlled.
