Vanuatu school start delayed by two weeks

The Ministry of Education in Vanuatu says it's extending the current school holidays by two weeks because of administrative problems.

The Minister Charlot Salwai has announced the new school year will now begin in mid-February.

His private secretary, Jean-Paul Virelala, says there's been a delay in appointing teachers in their respective postings and they need more preparation time.

He says there's also been a late release of results from exams that were marked in Fiji.

"From the cabinet point of view we find very unusual that we have to wait till January to release exam results. So this year when we haven't released yet, so once again, it's the same thing, we have to give ample time for parents and students to prepare for the start of school for 2010."

Jean-Paul Virelala says the delays happen every year and it's an issue needing to be addressed.
