Six violent or accidental deaths in Samoa over festive season

7:09 am on 6 January 2010

Six people died in Samoa over the festive season due to accidents or violence, but only two deaths were as a result of road accidents.

Police say the number of road accidents declined due to checkpoints for drink driving and speed in the wake of the change to driving on the other side of the road.

The six deaths includes two men who died from actual bodily harm, while a nine year old boy was electrocuted from a broken power line.

A 45 year old Samoan man from Australia visiting family drowned on New Year's day.
