Unicef joins Solomons quake relief effort

6:50 pm on 6 January 2010

The aid agency Unicef says its workers are beginning to get supplies to earthquake-struck villages in Solomon Islands.

Western province was hit by a series of earthquakes this week, with a 6.9 tremor less than two days after a 7.2 shake that triggered a tsunami.

Unicef's deputy representative in the Pacific says its team of three workers, assisted by government officials, is working down the coast of Rendova, delivering badly needed supplies such as water containers and taupaulins.

The Solomon Islands Government is yet to make a formal request for international assistance.
