US to discuss Okinawa bases with Japan next week

4:12 pm on 8 January 2010

US officials say the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will ask Japan to recommit to the US security pact and Okinawa military bases when she meets Japan's foreign minister next week.

Mrs Clinton will meet Katsuya Okada in Honolulu to discuss the U.S.-Japan relationship, which has come under strain due to a row over relocating the Marine Futenma airbase on Okinawa island.

The realignment of US forces in Japan involves moving thousands of marines to Guam.

But many Okinawa residents say the base should be moved off the island entirely, a view Mr Hatoyama backed during his election campaign.

Her stop in Hawaii is ahead of a trip to Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
