Cooks PM tipped to face no-confidence challenge

2:28 pm on 11 January 2010

The Cook Island Prime Minister is likely to face a vote of no confidence at the next parliamentary sitting.

The MP for Atiu Norman George says many are demanding that the Queen's Representative call a sitting under urgency to have a vote.

He says there is not a lot of support for the Prime Minister or his minority government.

"We have been making overtures to the Queen's Representative that this situation cannot continue. We cannot have five people running the country and something ought to be done about it and the only way the problem can be overcome is for the Queen's Representative to call parliament to sit and require a confidence motion to be put forward either in favour or against the current Prime Minister Jim Marurai."

Norman George says the lack of confidence came about after the PM dumped his deputy and former finance minister Sir Terepai Maoate before Christmas.
