NZ Red Cross specialists to assist in Solomon Islands disaster

12:02 pm on 12 January 2010

Two New Zealand Red Cross staff have left for Solomon Islands to help relief efforts following last week's earthquakes and tsunami.

The country was hit by a series of quakes early last week, the largest of a 7.2 magnitude, triggering landslides and a tsunami.

No one was injured but about 1000 people were left homeless on the island of Rendova.

Rex Aubrey and Matthew Poole will look after ongoing power and internet outages, which hamper recovery programmes.

The Solomon Islands Red Cross has received about 15,000 US dollars from the New Zealand Government to assist with relief and recovery efforts.
