Police in New Caledonia have caught an inmate who had been on the run since October.

Noumea's daily newspaper says Kevin Namuli was arrested in Port-Ouenghi where police were alerted to a group of young people trying to break in.

Namuli, who is 19, has had 35 convictions and was to serve jail time until 2018.

His sentence is now expected to be lengthened.

Namuli escaped from the Camp Est jail which was last year the French-run prison with most escapes.

Its overcrowding and poor state have been repeatedly denounced.
