Vanuatu sacks top immigration officer

5:27 pm on 21 January 2010

The Vanuatu government has sacked its principal immigration officer, James Narwayeng, over allegations of mishandling various immigration matters in recent months.

Our correspondent says among the issues of concern are reports that 50 Chinese nationals entered and resided illegally in Vanuatu.

Another recent incident involved an African national who managed to enter the country by plane from Fiji without a return ticket.

The new principal immigration officer is Francois Batick.
