Fiji regime again warns against dissent

11:44 am on 22 January 2010

The Fiji military has again warned that any one plotting against the interim government or the military will fail.

The latest warning has been issued by the Land Force Commander, Brigadier Pita Driti, via the Fijivillage website and comes amid continued emergency rules restricting public gatherings.

He has stressed that the military is monitoring political elements that may be having what he calls pocket meetings and plotting against the government.

Brigadier Driti says everyone should realise that there is no turning back.

He says the government and police are responsible for ensuring that no political gatherings take place without a permit.

There have been a raft of similar warnings this year and a decree has been passed that allows the interim prime minister to punish some retired dissenters by stripping them of their pension.
