American Samoa may get a three month extension on grant programme

11:08 am on 26 January 2010

American Samoa may be getting a three month extension from the U.S. Department of Labor on the National Emergency Grant programme, which is currently providing temporary employment for relief and disaster workers.

The grant is for six months but the American Samoa government has been working with the Department of Labor, who provided 24.8 million US dollars in the grant, to extend the programme, hopefully up to a year.

A little over 8 million US dollars was initially awarded to the territory in late October.

The Governor's Authorized Representative, Evelyn Vaitautolu Langford, says the "unofficial" word at this point from the Department of Labor is that American Samoa is looking at a three-month extension.

She says she is waiting for the official letter from the Labor Department about the three-month extension for the NEG grant.

Some 900 temporary workers have been hired so far under the programme and more are expected to be recruited as soon as paperwork is completed for worksites.
