Fiji police vow to hunt down child predators

2:25 pm on 3 February 2010

Fiji's police force has launched a fresh campaign to target perpetrators of what they say is a growing number of child sexual abuse cases.

The police say they have received reports of 23 sexual abuse cases for the month of January 2010 and 13 reports of physical abuse cases.

Figures were unavailable for January 2009, but a total of 954 physical abuse and 461 sexual offence cases were recorded last year.

In a televised message police are warning predators they will be hunted down, and urging people to be watchful of their children.

Spokesman Sergeant Suliano Tevita told FijiLive police are focussing their awareness programs on rural districts because abuse cases are more common there.
