Fiji farmers union calling on FSC to consider plight of sugar cane farmers

12:07 pm on 9 February 2010

The Fiji farmers union, Kisan Sangh is calling on the Fiji Sugar Corporation to consider the plight of sugar cane farmers and their need for union representation.

The Fiji Times reports Sangh general secretary Om Prakash saying it had not received a response from the corporation following a letter it had written more than a week ago asking it to review its decision to stop subscription deductions to unions directly from farmers' payments.

Mr Prakash says many of the farmers are not aware of the decision by the sugar corporation as they have not been informed.

He says in the meantime the union is hoping to call a board meeting to discuss this issue.

Two other union bodies the Fiji Cane Growers Association and National Farmers Union have vowed to continue operating for the farmers' sake despite the loss of income caused by the FSC's decision.
