The disaster management office in the Cook Islands says it has been unable to make contact with its emergency operation centre on Aitutaki after the island was battered by tropical cyclone Pat.
The director of the disaster management office on Rarotonga, Charles Carlson, says the main damage caused by cyclone Pat happened early this morning.
"Reports from families that is probably one of the worst cyclones they have experienced but we are not too sure about the extent of the damage at the moment. We are desparetly trying to get information as we can and get the communication back online."
Charles Carlson says the cyclone is still very close to Aitutaki.
