5:34 pm on 17 February 2010

One of Vanuatu's biggest high schools, Matevulu College, on Santo, will take about 100 students from China this year.

Alphonse Delaveau from the Ministry of Education, says this follows an arrangement between the college and Chinese families from Guangdong province, who want their children to improve their English.

Mr Delaveau says the Minister of Education, Charlot Salwai, has approved the enrolment of the foreign students, but says this mustn't hinder the education of ni-Vanuatu students.

The intake of Chinese students will result in extra year 11, 12 and 13 classes.

It is reported the Chinese students are to pay just over 3-thousand US dollars a year and will also contribute to the cost of dormitories and other improvements on the college campus, such as the dining hall and classrooms.
