Cook Islands tourism operators beckon visitors back to Aitutaki

Tourism officials in the Cook Islands say visitors should not be deterred from visiting the cyclone-hit island of Aitutaki.

Last week Cyclone Pat tore across Aitutaki, causing some damage to most of its houses.

But the Tourism Corporation Board says while some hotel rooms and grounds sustained minor damage, most operators were up and running again within a few days.

The board's Aitutaki representative, Thomas Koteka says they have been working hard to inform tourist suppliers and visitors that the island is open for business.

"Its just part of living in the Pacific. Its something that we deal with, and luckily we have good support, good infrastructure, good commmunications, that we are able to get imagery out there very quickly now to let people know that things are back to normal."

Thomas Koteka says they've had lots of enquiries about conditions on Aitutaki, but few cancellations and people are still boarding planes for the island.
