The New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully has looked at how New Zealand can help the fledgling tourism industry in Western Province in Solomon Islands.

Mr McCully spent yesterday in Munda in Western Province.

He says the province has enormous potential for tourism development and it's important to focus on economic and employment opportunities.

Mr McCully says the runway at Munda airport is the linchpin of any development but it is currently inadequate for commercial operations.

"Even for Dash 8's at this stage, so there is a decision to be made about some sort of refurbishment or resealing there. There is a more ambitious plan that's advanced to do something more significant - we have been working through that issue today. Been talking to some of the players in the industry, the fledgling industry as it is up there, to see what other issues confront them."
