The French overseas territories minister, Marie-Luce Penchard, says a special fund has been activated to help victims of Cyclone Oli, which struck French Polynesia at the beginning of the month.

The storm destroyed 600 homes when it hit several of the southern islands with winds of up to 260 kilometres an hour.

In a statement, she says those wishing to get assistance have until May the 8th to submit their applications.

It says next week, the French government will announce next week how much it will contribute to the costs of rebuilding houses destroyed by Cyclone Oli.
