Marshalls remember Bravo weapons test

2:14 pm on 1 March 2010

Some radiation-exposed Marshall Islanders are worried about US pressure to return them home as the country marks the 56th anniversary of the Bravo nuclear weapons test at Bikini Atoll.

Today is a national holiday to commemorate the victims, including Rongelap Islanders, who evacuated their island 25 years ago.

Our correspondent, Giff Johnson, reports.

"The US government has in recent years invested millions of dollars to support infrastructure development and clean up work on Rongelap Island to enable a re-settlement to take place. Now the US Congress is putting pressure on the Rongelap leadership to resettle by the end of next year. This is a big question mark for Rongelap people, even tough their local government is going ahead with building houses and it has installed the infrastructure necessary is there's still a lot of concern within the community about the safety of Rongelap."
