Tonga's new inter-island ferry is due to go into service in the first week of December.

The vessel is currently under construction in Japan and is scheduled in Nuku'alofa by October 20th.

The Matangi Tonga website reports that a five-member delegation from the Japanese boat builders was in the Tonga capital at the weekend.

The website quoted the designer, Watanabe Royonori, saying that the construction of the vessel should be completed in July, after which it will undergo sea trials.

The Japanese Government is funding the ship.
