One of the region's foremost specialist in travel medicine says the rate with which typhoid fever is spreading in Fiji is alarming.

Fifty-five people throughout the country have been infected with typhoid in the past week, bringing the total number of infections to 99.

The ministry of health suspects contaminated food and water to be sources of the outbreak.

Marc Shaw from the Worldwise Travellers and Vaccination Centre says the issue is worrying.

"55 cases a week's spread in Fiji is very fast. This does show that there's a need for urgent public health measures to prevent this from becoming a major concern to us, the equivalent which could have been something like Zimbabwe."

Marc Shaw says the public should adopt thorough hygiene measures.
