In Solomon Islands, tributes were paid to Paul Belande, the General Secretary of the Solomon Islands Public Employees Union, SIPEU, who died over the weekend.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Service, Ishmael Avui, allowed government workers to pay tribute to Belande at his residence yesterday morning and later at his funeral service.

Mr Avui says the move was a token of appreciation for the many contributions and achievements under his leadership of SIPEU.

In a separate statement, Acting Prime Minister, Fred Fono expressed sadness on behalf of Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua and Cabinet Ministers for the sudden passing of Belande.

Mr Fono has described the late Paul Belande as a "dedicated and committed" Secretary General.
