Appeal expected in Fiji PM assassination plot case

4:10 pm on 4 March 2010

The lawyer representing six men found guilty of a plot to assassinate Fiji's interim prime minister says they will appeal their convictions.

"The mitigation hearing has been underway since this morning and Justice Paul Madigan says the sentencing will likely take place tomorrow ."

Among those convicted are the high chief of Naitasiri, a former director of the Fiji Intelligence Service and five former Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit soldiers.

Lawyer Iqbal Khan says no matter what the sentence will be, his clients will lodge an appeal.

We'll definitely will appeal the decision on several grounds. there're many grounds, many misdirections by the judge, non-direction by the judge, on several counts we'll hopefully appeal next week.

A New Zealand businessman, Ballu Khan, who was arrested over the plot, was released in 2008 after winning a stay of proceedings.
