Fiji interim government to rent out empty Prime Minister's residence

The State-owned residence used by Fiji's prime ministers is to be rented out .

Fiji Live reports the Fiji government has decided to lease the residence in line with its policy to commercialise government quarters.

The Public Service Commission permanent secretary, Parmesh Chand, says the residence in Suva is ideally located and sure to attract a good tenant.

He says it is better to rent it out and generate some revenue rather than letting it lie idle.

Mr Chand says the property had been vacant for the past three years, and was last occupied by Laisenia Qarase, who was deposed as Prime Minister in December 2006.
