11:57 am on 9 March 2010

Talks have begun into the possible sale of the Irish-owned telecommunications firm Digicel Pacific Limited for 671 million US dollars.

Digicel Pacific's head of public relations and sponsorship, John Corcoran, confirmed to the Fiji Times that the Digicel Group had announced plans to acquire its sister company, which operates wireless and mobile businesses in six markets in the Pacific region.

Mr Corcoran says Digicel Group has evaluated numerous acquisition opportunities to continue its growth, reinforce its business, and capitalise on its management talent and resources.

He says the move is recognition of its success in the Pacific since its launch in Fiji in 2006.
