Disaster management officials in Fiji are preparing for the worst as Cyclone Tomas passes over the smaller islands to the east of Vanua Levu this morning.
Yesterday over five thousand people were evacuated from their coastal homes on Vanua Levu, as high waves flooded homes and damaged trees and power lines.
The Category 4 cyclone, considered one of the worst in seven years, is now moving southwards, with wind speeds of up to 270 kilometres per hour.
The director of Fiji's management centre, Pajiliai Dobui says communication has been lost on the islands like Taveuni and the Lau group, where the storm is headed.
"It is passing the area that is not that populated and not really well developed so of course it is going to be minimal in that place."
