3:28 pm on 16 March 2010

In Samoa, 13 untitled men, or taulele'a, in a Savaii village have been charged with arson after two houses belonging to a family which had been living in the village were burnt down two weeks ago.

The family had been banned from the community by a village council decision.

The assistant police commissioner, Sala Seaga Uili Lafaele, says an investigation is continuing and several chiefs and orators of Gataivai would also be charged.

The 13 suspects are to appear in the District Court in Apia on March the 25th for mention.

Meanwhile the Lands and Titles Court in Savaii has completed a hearing into the banishment decision, but a ruling is not due before the end of the month.
