300 Fiji homes destroyed by Cyclone Tomas

Fiji's disaster management office says its initial damage assessment shows about 300 homes were destroyed by Cyclone Tomas, primarily in the Lau Group.

The office says information is still being gathered but assessments currently show another three to four hundred houses were damaged.

Its operations manager, Anthony Blake, says they are now looking at ways to provide shelter for people

"We understand that there is a shortage of tents, however we are currently in discussion with donors to see what will be the next step. All evacuation centres are now closed, however there will be people staying in community halls and churches because their homes are destroyed."

Anthony Blake says at least 18 schools have been destroyed or damaged, but most schools are expected to resume today with some holding classes in community halls.

He says there has been extensive damage to crops but some should still be edible for two weeks, and seedlings are being distributed to the affected islands.
