Former Fiji parliamentarian due in court for violating emergency regulations

A former Fiji parliamentarian, Peceli Rinakama, is due to appear in court today on charges of violating the public emergency regulations more than two weeks ago.

Mr Rinakama had been seized by soldiers and was held for five days at an undisclosed place before police said he was free on bail.

The interim government and the military have declined all comment about the case.

He was detained shortly after the high court gave lengthy jail sentences to six men, including a high chief, for plotting to assassinate the interim prime minister.
