Vanuatu's Prime Minister says his government is looking to cooperate with China on hybrid rice cultivation to address Vanuatu's food security problem.

Edward Natapei, who is on a six-day China tour, visited a hybrid rice research center in Changsha in Hunan Province.

The Xinhua news agency reports that Mr Natapei discussed with Chinese experts how to apply the technology in Vanuatu.

Vanuatu imports rice from mainly Australia and Mr Natapei has said the price is quite high.

He says Vanuatu wishes to expand cooperation with China on the importation of rice.
