The residents of Tau Island in American Samoa's outer islands of Manu'a have received desperately needed food and petrol supplies.

Last week, Manua lawmaker, Fetu Fetui, called on the governor to declare an emergency in the Manu'a islands due to lack of transportation leading to a shortage of supplies.

The lack of shipping nearly resulted in New Zealand's Fletcher Construction company suspending work it was carrying out at Fitiuta airport because of a shortage of materials.

However the company ended up chartering the Fotu o Samoa to transport more materials and supplies.

The General manager of Fletcher Construction, Dean Hudson, says the boat also took food supplies and petrol.

He says Fletchers was glad they were able to help bring some relief to Manu'a residents.
