Niue pushes for plastic bag ban

There are hopes there'll be a voluntary agreement by traders in Niue to stop using plastic bags.

Last week the Assembly passed a motion calling for plastic bags to be replaced by recycled grocery bags by the beginning of next year.

That would need Cabinet's endorsement but a Cabinet Minister, O'Love Jacobsen, hopes it can be achieved without regulation.

"'I think it's very positive that the House has supported this but if we can get the co-operation of the traders, and there's not many of them, then that would be well and good. The cost, of course, would be passed on down to the consumers and they would be happy to do that too."
