Former Hilton employees in Tahiti on hunger strike

Former employees of the Tahiti Hilton Hotel in French Polynesia have begun a week-long hunger strike in protest at the redundancy provisions offered by the hotel's local owner.

The hotel closed a month ago before its shut-down scheduled for the end of March.

The former employees say they want the hotel building's owner, Louis Wane, to meet them, but he is reportedly overseas.

They have held several marches in Papeete and sought the territory's government's support.

The hotel closure followed a prolonged downturn in visitor numbers which have dropped to levels last seen in the 1990s.
