Food summit hones in on breastfeeding

A food security summit held in Vanuatu has highlighted the need to support breastfeeding.

The meeting in Port Vila ended with the drafting of a regional framework aimed at boosting local agricultural initiatives, ensuring basic commodities such as rice are fortified and regulating fatty canned meats.

UNICEF's Pacific representative, Dr Isiye Ndmobi, says improving the way babies are breastfed is just as important.

"A lot of Pacific Island mothers breastfeed their babies. What they don't do is they don't breastfeed properly. In other words when they initiate the breastfeeding soon after birth they introduce some supplements also and yet breast milk is adequate for the first six months. So it's a question of communication."
