Vanuatu women to march over killing

2:35 pm on 27 April 2010

A women's group in Vanuatu is organising a march following the killing of a woman and her three-year old daughter in Port Vila last week.

Police are releasing few details about the crime except to say they suspect a piece of wood was used in the killing.

But eyewitnesses say the 28 year-old woman was discovered unclothed in the Fresh Wota area.

The group Women Against Crime says the date for the peaceful march is yet to be set.

But its chairwoman Jenny Ligo says they want the community to take crimes against women seriously.

"We want to really mobilise well so that the whole community sees the importance because Women Against Crime's slogan is zero tolerance in all forms of crime against women and children."

Jenny Ligo is also the child desk officer for the Vanuatu Government and says they are developing a nationwide system to protect children.
