Fiji Court of Apeal orders reinstatement of lawyer

10:29 am on 10 May 2010

The Fiji Court of Appeal has ordered the reinstatement of former lawyer, Abhay Singh, to the Roll of Barristers and Solicitors.

Fiji Broadcasting Corporation says this puts a stay on the decision by the Independent Legal Services Commissioner to strike out Mr Singh's name.

The Court further ordered that Mr Singh not accept any new work until the matter had been finally decided by the Court in September.

Mr Singh was found guilty of unsatisfactory professional conduct by the Commission in January this year.

He appealed the decision to the Court of Appeal.

The Court noted that Mr Singh would still be required to apply to the Chief Registrar for a practicing certificate and that decision lies solely for the Chief Registrar to make in accordance with the Legal Practitioner's Decree 2009.

His practicing certificate expired in February.
