New NZ trade commissioner expected in Fiji next month

Reports from Fiji say a new Trade Commissioner from New Zealand is expected to take up office in Suva next month.

New Zealand's top diplomat in Suva, Philip Taula, has told Fijivillage News that Peter Lund was in Fiji last week and is expected to take up the post.

The move signals a further improvement in ties which follows last January's meeting of the two countries' foreign ministers.

In November, the Fiji regime expelled New Zealand's top diplomat, the third time in two years that Fiji sent home Wellington's top representative in Suva.

The expulsion was met by New Zealand sending home Fiji's high commissioner.

Fiji has said there will be no full restoration of ties unless New Zealand lifts the travel bans imposed on those deemed to be associated with the 2006 military coup.
