Fiji interim PM urges end to racial division

8:47 am on 14 May 2010

Fiji's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says Fiji cannot become a better country if there is a racial divide within society.

Fiji media report that Commodore Bainimarama was speaking to the chiefs of Kadavu, telling them that through the People's Charter, his administration will get rid of the racial divide.

He has also spoken about land being used as a trump card by greedy politicians which has made indigenous Fijians poorer.

Commodore Bainimarama says sugar cane leases were not renewed because of the misconception that indigenous landowners feared they would lose their land.

He says as a result, a lot of sugar cane farmers moved away and left land lying idle.
