Thousands of people in the Northern Marianas have turned out for a motorcade to show support to the U.S. Department of the Interior's recommendation for improved immigration status for foreign workers.

Organisers and participants put the crowd estimate at between 2,000 and 5,000, while the vehicle estimate was at 300 to 700, exceeding the expectations of the organisers.

Non-resident workers, their families and supporters joined the rally backing recommendations for improved immigration status for foreign workers who have been residing in the CNMI for at least five years.

The recommendations are for such workers to be given permanent residency status leading to U.S. citizenship, or granting them a status similar to that of Freely Associated States citizens.
