The StarKist Company says it will provide severance pay for cannery workers in American Samoa affected by the pending layoffs.
Last week, the cannery announced its decision to eliminate up to 800 jobs over the next few months.
StarKist president and CEO, Donald Binotto, says affected employees will get a 30-day notice and a severance payment but he didn't provide details.
However, he did say that severance pay depended on the years of service, position in the company, and whether the affected employee is paid hourly or by salary.
Mr Binotto declined to say how much StarKist will save by cutting its work force, saying as a privately owned company such details and information cannot be disclosed.
