Fiji to push trade at MSG talks

1:26 pm on 18 May 2010

Fiji interim attorney general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says he would like the leaders meeting of the Melanesian Spearhead Group to focus on the economy.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says the meeting, which will be held in Fiji, will help develop new trade ideas.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum has told the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation that with Fiji being the hub of the South Pacific, it has the potential to be an exporter to the other MSG countries, that is Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

Speaking at a seminar for exporters, he said there had been talk about boosting exports but that the trend has been negative.

Fiji is excluded from this August's Pacific Islands Forum meeting in Vanuatu in line with a Forum decision taken in Papua New Guinea last year.
