Senator says French Polynesians should be told about colonisation

A French Polynesian member of the French Senate, Richard Tuheiava, says the Polynesian people are entitled to know the truth about colonisation.

Mr Tuheiava has issued a statement after last week's UN Decolonisation seminar in New Caledonia from which French Polynesia was excluded because France had removed the territory from the decolonisation list.

Mr Tuheiava, who was removed by police from outside the conference venue, says the Kingdom of Tahiti was colonised by the former Kingdom of France.

He says any decolonisation process requires that the French state and the French Polynesian leaders accept a need to take stock of the territory's colonisation.

Mr Tuheiava says colonisation is an infamous and hated human creation which makes up a dark period of humanity's history.
