Cages ordered over possible mongoose spread in New Caledonia

New Caledonian authorities have ordered about 30 cages from New Zealand as efforts are underway to prevent mongoose from establishig themselves in the territory.

Last week, two specimen were caught in the port of Noumea but it is not known if more of them managed to get ashore.

According to Noumea's daily the two that were caught are a male and a female.

They have been put down and frozen and will be examined to in a bid to determine where they may have come from.

First reports suggest the mongoose may be of Indian origin.
