Nauru stalemate may find end soon

1:04 pm on 27 May 2010

There are signs of a possible breakthrough in the five-week long political stalemate in Nauru, which follows an inconclusive early general election.

This morning's session of Parliament has been adjourned until this afternoon to allow more time for negotiations on who might fill the Speaker's role.

Godfrey Thoma, who was briefly Speaker two weeks ago, called for an adjournment and he won support from both sides of the House.

He had called for the same sort of adjournment on Tuesday but on that occasion he didn't have the necessary backing.

The Nauru Government Information Office says it's not known if this represents any progress but says it gives some hope that a resolution could be imminent.
