Nauru parliamentary impasse continues

7:03 pm on 27 May 2010

Nauru's MPs have now gone five weeks without electing a Speaker.

There had been hopes a delayed sitting today might lead to a resolution of the impasse which has stopped the parliament from functioning since the early election on April the 24th.

MP Godfrey Thoma had called for the recess so negotiations for a Speaker could be finalised, but when nominations were called no names were put forward.

The Parliament will now meet next Tuesday in a further bid to end the deadlock.
